Past Webinar : Grocers and Chefs: Service-Model Thinking for Product-Model Folks with Rich Mironov

<itunes:author>The Product Management View Blog - sponsored by FeaturePlan</itunes:author>

Rich Mironov
Chief Marketing Officer
Enthiosys

As most new software development moves from licensed software to online Software-as-a-Service, product managers need to conceive of their offerings in completely new ways. Especially for "product" product managers, service models change our basic assumptions about how we build, release, market and support our products.

This presentation frames licensed-versus-hosted software models in terms of grocers and chefs: grocers sell raw ingredients for you to cook, while chefs provide individual meals on demand for their guests. How can we use our real-world food experiences to
understand shifts in buying behavior? What new skills and insights do product managers need as they move to Software-as-a-Service? Mr. Mironov will share his own "aha" moments bringing consumer and corporate online services to market.

Speaker bio:
Rich is a software product strategist and veteran of four high-tech startups. He is considered one of the pre-eminent experts on software product management and marketing. He joined Enthiosys in July 2007 and heads its marketing and business development activities, as well as leading client engagements.
Rich started his technology career as a software engineer at Hewlett-Packard. He managed networking products for six years at Tandem Computers, then joined Sybase to oversee software run on more than 40 operating systems. While there, Rich created Sybase’s Internet Products Group, whose web.sql product was the first commercial solution for dynamic linking of Web pages with databases. His Silicon Valley start-ups include Wayfarer Communications, iPass, Slam Dunk Networks and AirMagnet.
Author of the popular newsletter on technology product strategy, Product Bytes, Rich is a highly sought after speaker and writer on technology and technology product strategy.

Product Roadmaps can mean the difference between success and failure when delivering and marketing software products. They can be one of the most effective tools in a Product Management professional's arsenal. Done correctly they can help win and keep large customers and partners, and can guide the engineering and strategic planning efforts of a company. Unfortunately most Product Roadmaps are created "On The Fly" and under pressure when sales or the company management makes a last-minute request. As a result they don't have the impact they should. This session will cover the different types of Product Roadmaps, how to create each of them, and which type to use for different situations. Leveraging his experience developing Roadmaps for dozens of clients and companies, Mr. Lawley will share best practices, tips and practical advice so that attendees will come away with a thorough understanding of how to build their own Roadmaps.

Speaker bio:
Brian Lawley is the President and Founder of the 280 Group, a Product Management services firm that provides consulting, contractors, training and templates. He is also President of the Silicon Valley Product Management Association. During his twenty-year career in Product Management he has defined, launched and marketed over fifty successful products for companies such as Apple, Symantec, Adobe, Palm and dozens of startup and mid-sized companies.

Mr. Lawley is the Author of the Book “Expert Product Management: Advanced Techniques, Tips & Strategies for Product Management & Product Marketing.” He was nominated for the Product Management Excellence Award for Thought Leadership by the Association of International Product Marketing & Management in 2006 and 2007. He is the editor of Product Management 2.0, a newsletter and Blog devoted to excellence in Product Management and writes guest articles for many other publications.

He frequently speaks on the topic of Product Management and has been featured on CNBC's World Business Review and the Silicon Valley Business Report. Mr. Lawley is a Certified Product Manager (CPM) and Certified Product Marketing Manager (CPMM). He earned an MBA with honors from San Jose State University and Bachelors Degree in Management Science from the University of California at San Diego with a Music Technology minor.

When they hear the word “leader,” most people picture someone who has some degree of management or supervisory responsibility for a group of people; they typically direct the individuals’ day-to-day work and have some control over the compensation individuals receive.

In most organizations product managers do not have direct reports; however, they are responsible for assuring the timely release of their company’s products. They are under pressure to inspire others to greatness without having direct authority to hold others accountable. As a result, product managers must be persuasive, flexible, persistent and optimistic. They need to develop skills to lead people in such a way that makes them want to do great work out of respect for their leader.

Product managers have a great opportunity to become the de facto leaders in their organization. In this webinar Michael will provide practical advice to help in this quest. He will focus on:
•	Why product managers are responsible to lead their teams
•	Principles that—if practiced—will help product managers become the de facto leaders in their organizations
•	Ways that product managers can drive unity in purpose and action.
He will provide practical ideas and case studies that will help you to lead on purpose.

In today’s economy where innovation is the key to growth and competitiveness, more than ever the need for an integrated approach to Product Management is essential. Whether you are building hardware, software or products that consist of both, Product Management is all about optimization. When it comes down to the basics, a product manager’s value is based on how well he or she can optimize customer needs, company goals, and limited resources to consistently deliver competitive products to the marketplace that add value to both the company and the customer. Without an Integrated Product Management approach, your ability to optimize the product lifecycle are at great risk.
This presentation will address:
•	The current state of Product Management
•	Why the current approach has failed, and
•	Our approach and why it works.
Case studies and examples will also be provided, along with what it takes to get started.

It is no secret that the majority of high-tech products fail to meet their business objectives, and that countless release cycles are wasted on products that are either not useful or not usable. I argue that the root cause of these failed releases can most often be traced to how the role of product manager is defined at your company, and the capabilities of the people you choose for this role.

More often than not, high-tech companies confuse product marketing and product management. In this webinar, Marty will clearly and concisely define these roles and discuss the problems that occur when you either have one person covering both product management and product marketing roles, or when the true product management responsibilities are not adequately staffed.

Speaker bio:
Marty Cagan is a Silicon Valley-based product executive with more than 20 years of experience with industry leaders including eBay, America Online, Netscape Communications and Hewlett-Packard. Before founding the Silicon Valley Product Group to pursue his interests in helping others create successful products through his writing, speaking, and training, Marty was most recently Senior Vice-President of Product Management and Design for eBay, where he was responsible for defining products and services for the company's global e-commerce trading site.

For C-Level, executives, and directors working in marketing, development, engineering, operations, and quality who are dissatisfied with the levels of execution of corporate strategy. This webinar addresses the methods of Six Sigma Business Scorecarding that provide the ability to align product management activities and monitor execution of corporate strategy.

Unlike traditional leadership methods which are based on hope, Six Sigma Business Scorecarding provides a repeatable, defendable, and maintainable approach to alignment of product management. The Six Sigma Business scorecard has been developed to look at measures in all aspects of product management. It addresses the concerns that executives express about current scorecard systems, such as, ineffectiveness at relating to the employees who do the work. Most scorecards are strategic in intent and do not flow down to process measures.

With an understanding of the business trilogy, process model, dynamic economic environment, a six sigma scorecard was developed that personifies leadership and management; aligns purchases and operations; drives customer service and sales; and promotes employee excellence, innovation, and improvement.

It seems preposterous to outsource a strategic function like Product Management. The job requires a tremendous amount of intimate and often proprietary knowledge about the company, its customers, partners, and everyone's future plans. A product without a full time product manager is like a ship without a captain. All hands on deck don't quite cut it when someone needs to make ultimate decisions and ensure that everyone is politically rowing in the same direction. So the idea of outsourcing this job seems not only to be a bad idea, but it's probably close to impossible. Right?

Alyssa Dver will discuss how and what kinds of product management work can be outsourced to support product management or fill in during interim hiring periods. She'll use real examples to demonstrate what works and what doesn't, what to look for in a consulting product manager, and how to transition the work internally at the end. Finally, Alyssa will also discuss how to integrate outsourced product management with outsourced product development to ensure better product requirements, specification and overall delivery.

Alyssa Dver's book, "Software Product Management Essentials" is a compendium of Dver's 20+ years of success in conceiving and managing numerous commercial products. With over 10,000 copies sold, the book continues to win praise from professional software organizations and experts around the world.

With international experience as a product manager and chief marketing officer, Dver is now a sought out consultant helping all kinds of companies conceive, refine, develop and deliver world-class products.
The general premise of Agile development is that code leaves the organization perfect and always ready for customer use. In part, this is based on more modular development and techniques such as test-driven development (TDD). But is bug-free software practical, and what trade-offs does it imply? Product Managers know that absolute standards and mandates often lead to less-than-ideal results in the real world.

In this webinar, Peter Hodgkins will talk about the use of Quality Levels in an Agile organization and why thoughtfully defining different quality levels makes good business sense. Drawing on his direct experience managing large software efforts, he will paint scenarios needing an assortment of quality targets and standards, matching customers and business needs.

Speaker bio:
Peter Hodgkins is Roadmapping Practice Manager at Enthiosys, an agile product management consulting firm, where he helps software companies define and implement faster development processes and more strategic product roadmaps. He has more than 15 years of technology product leadership.
Before joining Enthiosys, Peter was a senior manager at VeriSign, where he led that company's worldwide Engineering Project Management Initiative, pioneered techniques for coordinating agile software development across time zones, and used agile methodologies to reduce development time by 30%.
Previously, he was Chief Technology Officer for Access International (Cambridge, MA) and started his career in the UK with Sporting Index Holdings plc and BP Amoco. Peter earned a Post-Graduate Diploma (Master's

So often in the race to develop better software and get products to market quickly, we miss the point. Often product managers are caught in the middle of a continual tug of war between design and development trade offs with competing priorities and artificial time lines. Finding the right balance can be tricky but the benefits are huge. This presentation will help you avoid some of the most common mistakes in software development by highlighting proven strategies you can use to drive product enhancements, lower development costs and accelerate your time to market. You will learn tips and tricks for leveraging user experience design together with Agile development best practices to break projects into small steps, create realistic time frames, meet deadlines, and deliver new features and releases every few weeks while incorporating constant feedback and improvements. These techniques are based on real world experiences and are applicable at any stage in the development cycle.

Product managers are the proxy to the market(s). The elements that are seemingly too formal for a start-up are often what help you move at lightening speed later down the road. Key items such as product definition and building a proper product team, often get left out of the mix in favor of writing code and “shipping.”

Problem is, a piece of code is not a product.

While those things are critical for start-ups to succeed, so is making sure you have effective requirements, excellent cross-functional relationships (whether that’s one marketing person and two developers, or more), and solid founder relationships.

This presentation covers some of the key elements in helping teams to understand why solving problems is critical, and what it really means to be market-driven - and not just say that you are.

Objective: Learn how to collect, organize and utilize one of the your most valuable, yet under-used resources to improve your sales, marketing and professional services results.

What might be the single most important asset for your sales and marketing toolkit? The answer? Customer Success Stories.

Knowledge of how existing customers were able to address their business problems using your software enables you to engage, present and sell to other customers who have similar situations.

Customer Success Stories that have received official sanction are posted on our websites and in our literature - these are our Formalized Success Stories. And yet, these jewels are a small fraction of the wealth available to us. What's missing?

In the course of our careers, each of us collects Success Stories from our customers. The Success Stories we glean we re-use when we speak with other customers or prospects who are in similar situations. Most of this information is never formally "blessed" by legal and is often used anecdotally. These are Informal Success Stories - and they are the lifeblood of a software company!

Peter Cohan is the founder and a principal of The Second Derivative, a consultancy focused on helping software organizations improve their sales and marketing results. In July 2004, he enabled and began moderating DemoGurus®, a community web exchange dedicated to helping sales and marketing teams improve their software demonstrations. In 2003, he authored Great Demo!, a book that provides methods to create and execute compelling demonstrations. The 2nd edition of Great Demo! was published March 2005. Before The Second Derivative, Peter founded the Discovery Tools® business unit at Symyx Technologies, Inc., where he grew the business from an empty spreadsheet into a $30 million operation. Prior to Symyx, Peter served in marketing, sales, and management positions at MDL Information Systems, a leading provider of scientific information management software. Peter currently serves on the Board of Directors for Collaborative Drug Discovery, Inc. and the board of advisors for Excellin, Inc. He holds a degree in chemistry. Peter has experience as an individual contributor, manager and senior management in marketing, sales, and business development. He has also been, and continues to be, a customer.
